There’s a distinctly aquatic theme running through this month’s issue. After all, Henley Royal Regatta, Swan Upping and the Traditional Boat Rally all take place in July, so we make no apologies for celebrating these great English traditions which provide a veritable feast for the eyes.

Find out where you can watch the great spectacle of Swan Upping on page 41 or why not lap up the atmosphere at this year’s Traditional Boat Rally?

No less a spectacle is the sighting of wildlife along our river banks. We welcome the return of the otter, voice concern over the water vole and celebrate that most elusive and beautiful of birds, the kingfisher on page 78. Have you spotted any rare or unusual species in our area recently? Do let us know by visiting www.berkshire-life.co.uk and going to our Forum pages to share your sightings.

On dry land, the people of Waltham St Lawrence have been ‘whetting’ their whistles to mark the 400th years since their very special ‘local’ The Bell was given to charity to benefit the community. Turn to page 53 to see their colourful celebrations.

We’ve a round-up of picnic events in the area, too, from classical concerts to tribute bands and from Shakespeare to Alice in Wonderland, all taking place in some beautiful settings.
Speaking of outdoor events, you’ll know if you went to May’s Royal Windsor Horse Show, just how perfect the weather was. Berkshire & Chilterns Life was the show’s media partner and I was privileged to present prizes in the Mini Show Pony Championship, pictured below. You can see our montage of the glorious event on page 10. Let’s just hope that July won’t see the rains of last year. Fingers crossed!
